Anti-Corruption and Access to Information: The Right to Information Bill, 2007

Abstract:

Today the epidemic of corruption continues to cripple Tanzania. According to the 2008 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) of Transparency International (TI), Tanzania ranks 102nd out of the 180 countries surveyed, receiving a score of 3 on a scale of 10 with 10 being totally clean and 0 being totally corrupt (TI, 2008). This policy paper explains the current state of corruption in Tanzania, its impacts, its sources, and a powerful policy solution. More specifically, after analyzing the effects corruption has on the nation of Tanzania, it demonstrates the ways in which the legal, systemic, social, and economic causes of corruption can be addressed and eliminated by legislation securing the right of access to information
